— Guilherme Sacamone (@GuilhermeSacam1) March 25, 2023Mayara lived there with her brother, who is 23 years old, also called Cesar, and survived the fire a year and a half ago. The young man inhaled smoke and was hospitalized.
The fire occurred in an apartment on Rua do Rocio, several blocks from CPTM’s Vila Olímpia Station.
Firemen were called shortly after 10:30 am on Saturday. According to Mayara’s father, his son was sleeping in one of the two bedrooms in the apartment when the fire initiated and then awakened to the smoke.
Her father said, “The fire started in the living room, on the sofa, and spread quickly.” Mayara was in the other room and would not have been able to get away eventually.
Her brother called her but heard no response. Mayara would then have jumped out the window. The beauty queen’s father said, “She did it so consciously that before she threw her purse.”
As per the SSP, the blaze would have been intensive on the 6th floor of the apartment, but the smoke, quite thick, spread to other flats. Altogether, 13 fire teams were positioned at the site to control the damage.
She was even taken to the Hospital das Clínicas, in the west zone. Her brother was treated at BP-A Beneficência in São Paulo, in the central region.
Mayara would be veiled in João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. Her family is waiting for the discharge of the dead body.
Mayara’s father said he still has not been able to process the tragedy. “It is very hard to admit the passing of a daughter who 15 days ago was with you. I called her every day, so this is being very difficult for me, since yesterday I can’t eat or sleep. I can’t believe she died. Losing a daughter is the worst thing in the world. It’s everything a parent doesn’t want.”
He further added that the building is over 35 years old and that the rented apartment had never been renovated, nor had it been maintained in terms of electrical and gas installations.
Mayara was very close to her family, even though she traveled constantly. According to her father, she even won four Miss contests.
The magistrate of the city of Itaporanga, where Mayara was selected Miss Sertão Paraibano in January this year, announced official mourning for three days.
